The noisy Seafire 47s always looked somewhat incongruous on dry land. VR966 visited Kai Tak from HMS Triumph for gun harmonisation, compass swinging and minor servicing. Before leaving, visiting carriers would often offload their unserviceable and wrecked aircraft.

At Sek Kong the author's favourite vantage point was the top of the photo tender. Pilots returning from patrol were well aware of this and, knowing that McHard usually had a camera at the ready, would vie with one another to see who could get the most dramatic shot and scare the life out of the photographer! Note how the Korean war zone stripes were painted over the aircraft serial numbers - the individual aircraft letter was repeated beneath the nose.

It is February 1949 and the detachment of 60 Sqn to 27 APC Butterworth involved everyone in hectic activity. Practice bombs, cement-headed rockets and 250lb live bombs were all deployed. The Spitfire's wing-mounted camera gun can be seen in the starboard wing root. These aircraft were grey and green with yellow leading edges outboard of the cannon.

Another Spitfire FR.XVIII landing at Sek Kong, this time on August 5, 1950. The noise of the growling Griffons on the returning aircraft was a sound that those who experienced it will never forget.

Pictured at Kai Tak in December 1949, in pristine condition before Korean black and white wing bands were applied, is Spitfire FR.XVIII TP427. It was in this machine that Fg Off Simons suffered a brake failure. In order to prevent running off the end of the runway into parked aircraft, the pilot retracted the undercarriage. The result of this action was pictured in Aeroplane Monthly of January 1989.

Just before 28 Sqn 's departure for Sek Kong, the Spitfire FR.XVIIIs were beginning to look sunbleached and scruffy. A decision was made to remove camouflage paint, a task undertaken by all squadron personnel, including the aircrew and the squadron CO, Sqn Ldr Yule! These two photographs were taken while the first Spitfire was being thus treated. Its pilot, Candian P2 Macmullen, in shirt sleeves and with scraper in hand, is assisted by Cpl Ibbotson, with old broom head, and Cpl Kerr with caustic solution. The supporting duet on the fuselage is LACs Skivington and Kelly, one listening to the camera hatch.

Approaches to Sek Kong were less hazardous than those to Kai Tak - at least it was possible to overshoot. This Spitfire was snapped on August 4, 1950.

Dawn breaks over Sek Kong behind the neatly lined-up Spitfire FR. XVIIIs, with their protective quilted cockpit canopy covers strapped in place. This picture was taken after a night on guard duty. At Sek Kong the principle "enemy” activity was the stealthy removal of quite large areas of PSP runway by the local wide-boys. No-one was ever caught redhanded and it remains a mystery how the heavy steel plates were uplifted so silently.

The big five-bladed propeller on the Spitfire XVIII absorbed the enormous power of the Griffon engine, producing tremendous torque on take-off, which would sometimes catch the unwary pilot off guard. This nose-over of 60 Squadron's V-Victor followed a torque-induced ground loop at Sembawang in June 1949. Bits of the propeller were scattered all over the airfield. Note the small underwing serial numbers, the inboard positioning of the roundels and the two rear fixings for the long-range belly fuel tank.
