Officers desperately try to grab the Pup, which is already well down the short deck, as Dunning applies right rudder during the fatal landing attempt on August 7, 1917. The Pup’s upward-angled Lewis gun has been removed, but its tripod mounting just forward of the cockpit is still in situ.

The wreckage of Dunning’s Pup is hoisted aboard Furious. The starboard wings and tailplane, being the first to hit the water, have taken the brunt of the damage.

A close-up of the nose shows how the aluminium cowling has been pressed into the Le Rhone rotary engine. The propeller is virtually undamaged. Note the deflated starboard wheel.
