Регистрационный номер: G-AFFG [12] The stubby appearance of the Aerogypt I is apparent in this photograph taken at Heston in March 1939. The Helmy flap is retracted flush with the cabin roof. Lending scale to the aircraft is Helmy and Dorothy Arkell, his wife-to-be. The aircraft first flew in February 1939 and was converted to a tricycle undercarriage in 1943, so this scene must fall between those two dates.

Регистрационный номер: G-AFFG [12] The extraordinary Helmy Aerogypt G-AFFG in its Mk I configuration, powered by three Douglas 22 h,p. Sprites. Designed by Egyptian S. Helmy, the Aerogypt featured a hinged roof that acted as a landing flap. Completed during the winter of 1938-39, the Aerogypt made its first flight in February 1939 from Heston. It ended its days with a tricycle undercarriage and powered by two 65 h.p. Continentals. G-AFFG will be featured in a forthcoming article.

Регистрационный номер: G-AFFG [12] The Aerogypt I photographed at Heston on March 19, 1939. The patented Helmy flap is being held in the up position by Saleh Helmy, nearest the camera, and an assistant. The maximum angle of incidence was 23 and, combined with the fuselage, the lifting aerofoil contributed 50 per cent of the lift.

Two identical views of the Aerogypt I taken at Heston in March 1939, showing the patented Helmy flap raised and retracted. Although the NPL commented favourably on the aerodynamic properties of the flap, they declared the idea mechanically impracticable. Certainly there are no mechanical means for operating the flap visible in these photographs. -

Регистрационный номер: G-AFFG [12] Perhaps because its designer was an Egyptian national, Helmy Aerogypt G-AFFG continued its development through the war. Illustrated is its Mk.III incarnation, last flown in September 1940. Work started again in 1943 when it became the Mk.IV with tricycle undercarriage. There is an AW Ensign in the background

Регистрационный номер: G-AFFG [12] The Aerogypt during transition to Mk IV configuration. The three Sprite two-stroke engines have been replaced with 65 h.p. Continentals and a tricycle undercarriage has been substituted. The degree of enlargement of the fin and rudder area may be clearly seen.
