D.Bower - Finland goes for Grob
The Kuokkalansilts bridge over Lake Jyvasjarvi divides the western side of Jyvaskyla from its eastern suburbs and provides a stunning backdrop as GO-3 heads away from the city
This ‘temporary’ structure was built to house the Grob 115Es as they arrived from the UK while a purpose built Grob hangar was being constructed. However, some have observed it is built to such a high standard that it should become permanent and supplement the new facility
On the way back to the Tikkakoski ramp after a training sortie, GO-8 follows the lines to its parking spot
Colonel Kari Rusanen is Squadron Commander of Fighter Squadron 41 at Tikkakoski Air Base. He is responsible to the FINAF HQ for all four Phases of training at Tikkakoski. Patria is responsible to him as a service provider to ensure all Grob 115Es are serviced and maintained to, or above, FINAF standards
During the Conscript and Cadets flying course, students are responsible for moving the Grobs out of and back into the hangars. They are also tasked with refuelling the aircraft in order to instil maintenance procedures should they land away from Tikkakoski
Overflying the Ski resort of Laajavuori, just 2 1/2 miles northwest of Jyvaskala with the ski slope prominent in the background. This provides a popular identification way-point during Grob pilot training as it is only ten miles southeast of Tikkakoski Air Base
Returning to Tikkakoski Air Base after a passing rain shower, GO-3 overflies the new section of highway 4/E75, the major road that links the capital city of Helsinki in the south to Utsjoki in the far north. This is known in Finland as ‘The European Highway’ as it links Finland to the rest of Europe
The new, all-glass, Patria-designed, built and installed instrument panel (left) replaces the aged analogue version on all 28 Grob 115Es. All upgrade work on the Grobs was carried out at the Patria facility at Halli AB 48 miles south of Tikkakoski
As well as upgrading the Grob 115E airframes, during late 2017 Patria was also contracted to design, manufacture and install four high fidelity simulators at Tikkakoski
