Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 31 (VX-31) at NAWS China Lake, California, operates a single T-39D BuNo 150992/393, which is used during various stages of weapons test and evaluation. This T-39 is the only other active example in the US Navy.

In the spirit of the 2011 Centennial of Naval Aviation celebrations, VT-86 painted one of its aircraft in a heritage scheme. The paint job was applied to T-39N BuNo 165523 at Perryville, Missouri. It represents a Grumman F3F-2 assigned to the Enterprise (CV6) Air Group, circa 1938.
