Rotachutes P-1 and P-3, as Mark IIIs. The size of the pilot, who represented 70 per cent of the loaded weight, emphasises just how small these aircraft were. The hanging "control column“ loop, attached directly to the rotor hub, is well shown in the right-hand picture.

Rotachute P-5 arouses the curiosity of visitors at an open day. Few civilians would have been aware that these strange machines existed, as they seldom strayed beyond the aerodromes where they were tested.

Views of Rotachute Mk IV P-7, showing the final variant’s distinctive endplate fins which finally cured the directional instability. In this view, the circular lead balance weights on the footrest crossbar are conspicuous.

Rotor tests were conducted using a rotor attached via a universal joint to a pylon on the Ford lorry. Rotor incidence could be varied.

Rotachute Mk III P-5 displays the short sprung central skid and two mainwheels of the type. Minimal instrumentation was provided on the small “dashboard" between the pilot's legs, which carried an airspeed indicator, an altimeter, a rotor revolution counter, a stopwatch and a fore-and-aft level.

The Mk I Rotachute had a short tapered bag of rubberised fabric carrying its tail surfaces. The bag’s shape was maintained by the airflow while the device was in flight, but the Mk I proved directionally unstable.

The Rotachute III was the penultimate development, and flew well, though its directional stability left a little to be desired. Tailplane fins remedied this.
