The large black smudge in the centre of this picture was left when Smith's burning Lancaster exploded just above Lake Sihl. At the top of the photograph the shore blends with the snow-covered lake, except for the wooded tongue of Schonbachli hamlet.

The scattered wreckage of Smith's Lancaster on the thick ice of Lake Sihl, Switzerland, on the morning of February 26, 1944. In the background is the eastern shore, on the left of which a Dornier also crashed, on November 13, 1940.
