Fine attention to detail - and the application of plenty of elbow grease - is apparent in this head-on view of NC612.

Kreutzer Air Coach NC612 (c/n 102), the subject of this article, was the first example to fly - but it was not the first example built. That distinction went to the unfortunate K-1 Air Coach prototype, X-501 (c/n 101), seen on display here, brand new and unflown, at the Los Angeles Automobile Show in April 1929. A few days later it was destroyed in a fire that consumed more than 300 cars and 12 aircraft.

NC612 remodelled for the projected 1933 K-5 production series by Air Transport Mfg Ltd of Glendale, California, in March 1933. Four aircraft were in various stages of completion when the factory was destroyed by fire that September. Subsequently NC612 was sold in Mexico as XB-AHO, where it remained in service until 1941. It was salvaged in 1982 and repatriated in 1986.
