In 1919, an expeditionary force was sent to Archangel in North Russia to protect large stocks of equipment originally consigned to the Russian army before the new government was overthrown by a Communist coup. This soon developed into support for the local White Russian forces. Among the aircraft sent was a small air unit of which the three aircraft illustrated were a part. The photographs were taken at Obozeikaya and are of "A" Flight aircraft. They are D.H.9 F1142, B7914, a rebuilt Sopwith 1 1/2-strutter and Snipe E6353 (shown), built by Boulton & Paul.

Alan White has provided the photograph of a Sabre which has crash-landed at English Bicknor in the Forest of Dean, about four miles east of Monmouth. We do not have a recorded write-off for this location and the serial is not visible so it would appear that the aircraft was salvaged. Any ideas?

The Luftwaffe's last fling. Operation Bodenplatte, caught many Allied aircraft on the ground as New Year's Day broke in 1945. This shot show's one completely burnt out Typhoon and another of the same unit with a damaged fin. At the time of the attack the unit was stationed at Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

At first glance, the photograph appears to be of a fighter unit but despite the colours, the aircraft are Audax army co-operation aircraft transferred to No.4 Flying Training School at Abu Sueir. The individual letter is carried below the rear cockpit.
