One experiment inherited from the Torpedo Development Unit was the adapting of a Catalina IB for dropping 18-inch Mk.XII torpedoes fitted with a monoplane Air Tail Mk.IV, earlier trials with a Mk.III tail having been unsatisfactory due to lack of roll control.
