Ron has also sent in a photo from the National War Museum in Malta of their Spitfire EN199, which has been the subject of a running commentary in recent issues of Aeromilitaria.
It is now assembled and looks beautiful in its desert scheme. It has the name Mary Rose under the windscreen, presumably for having emulated an earlier Mary Rose by surviving, although it is in better condition than the one in Portsmouth Dockyard.

  • The Storch was picked up in the desert and used by No.3 Squadron RAAF. NM+ZS was the German unit code. Can anyone identify the original owner?

  • Ron Backhouse has dredged up some more Mediterranean memories. The seaplane is a Dornier Do.22 of the Yugoslav Navy, one of eight which were forced out of their base by the German invasion in April 1941. They were taken under the wing of No.228 Squadron and flew anti-submarine patrols as No.2 (Yugoslav) Squadron until lack of spares caused their withdrawal from service.

The photograph from Dave Birch is of a Fairey IIIF. S1508 is just about decipherable. This aircraft belonged to Kalafrana and crashed on 16 April 1935.
What seems odd is that it was apparently painted all black and has Type B roundels, which is unusual for a IIIF, to say the least. Although delivered to Malta as a seaplane, it had acquired a land undercarriage by the time of the accident.
Possibly it was used for anti-aircraft co-operation purposes and was painted for night flying.
