  • The aircraft in question would, however, appear to be that described and depicted in Jane's All the World's Aircraft for 1924 as the Avro 504K Mk.II. This was indeed its original designation when the type was first conceived in July 1922 but in October 1924, the designation was changed to 504N and the design was last modified in August 1925, though to what extent is not known.
    The photographs, which we believe were taken at Hamble in the summer of 1924, show an anonymous silver 504 of this type with RAF roundels, tapered ailerons, modified centre section with fuel tank and the distinctive oleo radial arm undercarriage which later characterised the early RAF 504Ns. Identification is difficult as the pictures appear to have been taken prior to the allocation of a serial number.
