The Universal Freighter made its first appearance at Farnborough in 1950, where, along with the Brabazon, it dwarfed all the other exhibits. The freight doors on the prototype were downward-opening, and the ramp hydraulically operated by a hand pump.

Blackburn chief test pilot Harold “Tim” Wood peers down from the cockpit of the Universal Freighter. On lifting off during the maiden flight of the prototype, Wood reportedly said to his copilot D.G. Brade: “My side’s airborne, how about yours?”

When the Air Ministry issued Specification C.3/46 for a medium-range tactical transport, General Aircraft Ltd started work on the Universal Freighter Mk 1 prototype at Feltham. It was felt that the adjacent aerodrome at Hanworth would be too small for flight tests, and the aircraft was dismantled, transported to Brough and reassembled.
