To ease the loading and discharging of particularly bulky items, the clamshell doors were often removed, crew members having to be careful to not go too near the edge.

The tailboom of the Beverley measured 39ft x 8ft x 6ft, and was able to carry the same amount of freight as a DC-3, or as many people as a Viscount.

Регистрационный номер: XB263 [2] A superb example of the masterful work of the doyen of air-to-air photographers, CHARLES E. BROWN; up close and personal with a Blackburn Beverley in 1955. The big transport was used for the 1955 Fahud Airlift;
CHARLES E. BROWN took the study of the fifth production Blackburn Beverley, XB263, en route to the 1955 SBAC Display at Farnborough.
This magnificent Charles Brown portrait shows XB263 en route to the SBAC show at Farnborough in 1955, and gives a great impression of the sheer size of the Beverley.Самолёты на фотографии: Blackburn Beverley / B-101 - Великобритания - 1950

Регистрационный номер: G-AOEK, XB260 In November 1955, Blackburn’s own Universal G-AOEK took part in the Fahud Airlift, an operation to move 129 tons of oil-drilling equipment 365 miles from Umm Said in Qatar to Fahud in Oman. The operation was completed after nine flights in as many days.
The runway conditions at Fahud were considerably worse than those at Umm Said, but the Universal did not require a single tyre change throughout the entire operation in Oman, a testament to the mammoth freighter’s ruggedness.Самолёты на фотографии: Blackburn Beverley / B-101 - Великобритания - 1950

Beverleys were often used for (comparatively) rapid deployment of troops to trouble-spots around the world, such as Aden and Cyprus.

General Aircraft Ltd, which merged with Blackburn in January 1949, had a wealth of specialist expertise in designing large, load-carrying aircraft, having built the GAL.49 Hamilcar which entered service in 1942. The 110ft-span glider saw service in the Normandy landings, and in the Rhine assault crossings at Arnhem and Wesel in September 1944.Самолёты на фотографии: General Aircraft Hamilcar / GAL.49 - Великобритания - 1942

When the Air Ministry issued Specification C.3/46 for a medium-range tactical transport, General Aircraft Ltd started work on the Universal Freighter Mk 1 prototype at Feltham. It was felt that the adjacent aerodrome at Hanworth would be too small for flight tests, and the aircraft was dismantled, transported to Brough and reassembled.Самолёты на фотографии: General Aircraft Universal Freighter / GAL.60 - Великобритания - 1950

Регистрационный номер: WF320 [4] The Universal Freighter made its first appearance at Farnborough in 1950, where, along with the Brabazon, it dwarfed all the other exhibits. The freight doors on the prototype were downward-opening, and the ramp hydraulically operated by a hand pump.
