J-BARL Mitsubishi T-1.1 Modified seaplane. (300-360 hp RollsRoyce Eagle 12-cyl water-cooled vee). C/n Mitsubishi 3. Ando Aeroplane Research Studio. CofA 10.28. Regn cancelled 8.30.
Precise identification is uncertain, but it seems that this is a modification of a Navy Type 10 Carrier Torpedo Aircraft designed by Herbert Smith. This type was a single-seat open cockpit triplane normally powered by a 450 hp Napier Lion, of which 20 were built.
Reasons for above identification are as follows:
  1. It is said that one Type 10 was modified as a seaplane and used by Ando as a passenger transport and pilot trainer. Of 36 registrations known to Ando, only J-BARL remains as an unidentified designation.
  2. Mitsubishi company designation of Type 10 was 1 MT1 N, this seems to represent 'one-man-torpedo'. The next Mitsubishi carrier attack aircraft after the Type 10 was the Type 13 and the civil version of Type 13 was known as the T-1.2. So logically the T-1.1 designation seems to be a civilianised Type 10.
Modifications must have been fairly extensive because no Type 10 or other Mitsubishi single-engined aircraft used the Rolls Royce Eagle (s/n 6150 is quoted for this example) and a 4-blade propeller was fitted rather than the 2-blade of the Type 10. The aircraft was also modified from a single-seater to carry one pilot and one passenger.
