The photo is of a LeO 4 built in 1917 with a 200 hp Clerget 11E rotary engine. The firm was one of several that built the 4,200 Sopwith 1/2-Strutters constructed in France and it hoped to sell its new aircraft to follow the Sopwiths off the production line.

The umbrella wing design was not a success and a new upper wing was fitted to the LeO 4/1 with a new fin and rudder. However, its performance was below that of other contenders for the contract and it remained a one-off, later being registered F-ABFR.
Although it bore a resemblance to the 1 1/2-Strutter, it differed in several ways (apart from the bizarre wings).
