Seen under test by the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1944, the George Miles-designed M.39B Libellula was a proof-of-concept 5/8-scale piloted flying model of the company’s proposed M.39 tandem-wing bomber. -

The Miles M.39B fitted with the modified front wing and with the repositioned pitot tube. The aircraft was painted yellow overall and bore the new “B conditions" marking U4.

A good flying view of the yellow Miles M.39B, showing the excellent field of view for the pilot. The venturi pitot on the new fuselage nosecap was fitted for the second series of RAE tests.

This Junkers Ju 52/3m fuselage was photographed at Woodley in 1948, or thereabouts. It is believed that it was used by the newly-formed Air Britain as their HQ. Note the remains of the tandem-wing Miles M.39B Libellula in front of the aircraft.
