Modern refuelling methods make it possible for a bomber to be "topped up" when well on its journey from a base safely in the rear, and also enable it to be filled beyond take-off load. The Overstrand and the Vickers bomber demonstrating the method at Hendon on Saturday.
Overstrand prototype J9770 and the Vickers B.19/27 J9131 demonstrate inflight refuelling techniques at the RAF Display at Hendon on June 26, 1937. No fuel was transferred on this occasion, but successful experiments, in which water or fuel was transferred using a system devised by Flt Lt R.L.R. Atcherley, were carried out at the RAE. The work was continued by Flight Refuelling Ltd in 1938.

  • Регистрационный номер: J9186   [2]

The Overstrand prototype, converted Sidestrand J9186, makes its debut at the RAF Display, Hendon, on June 30, 1934, as “new type”number 13.
The Boulton and Paul Overstrand medium bomber equipped only one squadron - No 101 - and was the first RAF aircraft to be equipped with an enclosed gun turret mounted in the nose.

  • Регистрационный номер: J9770   [2]

J9770 was converted from a Sidestrand to become the “second prototype" Overstrand, incorporating the changes recommended following the official tests of J9186, including a nose turret of greater diameter. Note the underfuselage recess for bomb stowage.

  • Регистрационный номер: J9185

Standard Overstrand J9185 was originally built as a Sidestrand III. It became “P” of 101 Sqn in January 1935, but crashed at North Coates Fitties on September 9 that year and was struck off charge.

No. 101 (Bomber) Squadron is now receiving the "Overstrand" in place of the "Sidestrand." This medium bomber, with two "Pegasus IIM" engines, does 152 m.p.h.
A slightly earlier study of the Overstrand prototype, converted Sidestrand J9186. Features such as the polygonal cowlings, tailwheel and lever-suspension main undercarriage had all been tested on Sidestrands. The untapered section at the tailplane ends was changed in subsequent machines.

  • The ultimate Overstrand development was the unbuilt Superstrand, with Pegasus IVs, retractable undercarriage and numerous refinements.

  • Регистрационный номер: J7938

Comparison of the first prototype Sidestrand, J7938, with the Overstrand emphasises the beefier and more pugnacious appearance of the latter. While J7938 weighed 8,850lb loaded, a loaded Overstrand tipped the scales at 12,000lb. J7938 is seen here after Frise ailerons had been fitted, but with the original square fin and rudder without a servo-rudder.

  • The Boulton and Paul "Sidestrand" is exhibited stripped on one side and covered on the other. Both engine mountings and fuselage nose piece are hinged.
A semi-naked Sidestrand II reveals its structural details to the press and public at the Aero Show at Olympia, London, in July 1929. Especially well shown are the hinged engine mountings, which gave easy access to auxiliaries without the need to disconnect any fuel, oil or control connections, and the hinged nose section which allowed the nose-gunner’s position to be swung to port to make interior equipment accessible.
