Air International 1988-01
Airscene
The latest service version of the Tu-22M alias Tu-26, the Backfire-C, differs from Backfire-B in having wedge-type air intakes and a recontoured nose. A number of Backfire-Cs are now operational with both the Long Range Air Force and the Naval Air Force.
There will be a major balloon rally in April 1988 and at least two re-enactments of England-Australia flights are planned, with Queensland flier Tim Williams following Bert Hinkler’s 1928 solo route, using, like him, a D.H.80A Puss Moth, and Bristol pilot Brian Milton flying a Dalgety Flyer microlight in a commemoration of the 28-day journey by Ross and Keith Smith in a Vickers Vimy in 1919. (The latter will not be the first UK-Australia flight by microlight. Eve Jackson having completed such a journey in a CFM Shadow during 1987.)
