    Douglas C-54A Skymaster G-AJPL, formerly 42-107445, NL-309 and PH-TAK, named Sky Wisdom, at Lydda in March 1948. On February 4, 1949 it crashed into trees while landing at Castel Benito, Libya after both port engines failed following fuel starvation. Although the pilot was killed, the 40 passengers and eight crew survived.

    Armstrong Whitworth Ensign 2 G-AFZU Everest, photographed at Lydda in February 1945. First flown in June 1941, this aircraft was delivered to BOAC and was shot at by a Heinkel He 111 in the Bay of Biscay on November 9, 1941. In company with the other Ensign 2, G-AFZV, the aircraft flew a shuttle service between East and West African ports during the war. Later it is alleged to have fallen into German hands. G-AFZU was finally scrapped at Hamble on April 16, 1947. Although construction of ’ZU began in 1939, the war delayed its completion until 1941, when the Ensign was fitted with four 950 h.p. Wright Cyclone radial engines in place of the standard Armstrong Siddeley Tigers fitted to earlier Ensigns.

    Skyways Avro 685 York G-AHLV Sky Courier at Lydda in March 1948. First registered in June 1946, this York flew with the airline until withdrawn from service in February 1952.

    D.H.89 Dragon Rapide VQ-PAR, belonging to Aviron Co, one of only two Jewish commercial aviation companies operating in Palestine at the time. The company later formed the core of Hel Avir, the Israeli Air Force. Photographed in March 1948, this Rapide was acquired in 1947 and entered service in November. With the acquisition of three more Rapides in May 1948 the aircraft were used as bombers by the newly-formed Israeli Air Force and carried up to four 250lb bombs.

  • Misr Airlines D.H. 89 Dragon Rapide SU-??? photographed at Lydda in February 1945, at the time that it was used on the Cairo-Lydda-Beirut service. The Rapide was named Jerusalem (Al-Quds, in Arabic).

    Handley Page Halifax C.8 G-AKGZ photographed at Lydda Airport in March 1948. This was one of four Halifaxes operated by the Bovingdon-based World Air Freight company. In March 1948 a World Air Freight Halifax operated a freight charter flight to Damascus on behalf of the Middle East Oil Company - G-AKGZ was probably the aircraft used. This Halifax began operation on the Berlin Airlift but crashed at Gatow on October 8, 1948, just two days after it began operations. Formerly PP338 of 301 Sqn, it was named North Wind during its civilian service.

    Two Iraqi-registered Miles Aerovans snapped at Lydda in March 1948. The nearer aircraft is YI-ABW, delivered to Iraq the same month. This Mk IV was scrapped at Baghdad in 1952. The other Aerovan is almost certainly YI-ABV, formerly G-AJWK and delivered at the same time as YI-ABW. This Mk IV was registered to the Iraq Aeroplane Society and was also scrapped in 1952.
