DC-4 / C-54 / R5D Skymaster
- C-54 на 26 мест с моторами R-2000-3;
- C-54A (R5D-1), грузо-пассажирский самолет с моторами R-2000-7, усиленным полом, грузовой дверью, перевозил груз до 14 500 кг или 50 пассажиров;
- C-54B (R5D-2 "Скаймастер" I), вариант C-54A с интегральными баками в крыле;
- VC-54C, специальный вариант для правительственных перевозок на базе C-54B, экипаж 7 чел., 14 мест для пассажиров, персональный самолет для президента Ф. Рузвельта имел лифт;
- C-54D (R5D-3) с моторами R-2000-11;
- C-54E (R5D-4), вариант предыдущей модификации на 44 - 50 мест с измененной бензосистемой;

The introduction of the C-54 into service from the summer of 1942 saw the USAAF provided with a rugged and reliable long-range heavy transport capable of moving troops and equipment to theatres of operation all over the world - a vital type urgently needed by a service that was initially ill-prepared and ill-equipped for a global conflict. Despite its remarkable ubiquity, however, the C-54 was never converted for use as a bomber.

Douglas’s revised DC-4 design was much less ambitious than its big brother, but retained the DC-4E’s four-engined layout and tricycle undercarriage. Despite the new design garnering orders from several airlines, the US War Department took over all provisional orders for the type in the wake of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and allocated them to the USAAF as C-54 transports.

Aeroplane Monthly 1988-05 / ??? - And there's more where these came from...
Douglas C-54 Skymasters were built at Santa Monica and Chicago, the latter plant accounting for two-thirds of total production. The C-54 was the US Army's first four-engined transport and was the military version of the DC-4A, which had been put into production at the time of America’s entry into the war.

Aviation Historian 36 / N.Stroud - Canada's ice patrol
CF-KAD [3] Douglas C-54B CF-KAD (c/n 18356) has its four Pratt & Whitney R-2000 Twin Wasp engines run up at an unidentified location. The aircraft’s ice-reconnaissance work with the Canadian Department of Transport (DoT) was undertaken from Gander in Newfoundland, but there is no information on where our photographs were taken; it is more likely that it was at Downsview airport in Toronto. Note the Canadair Sabre cockpit mounted in the cockpit roof.

CF-KAD [3] Another photo of CF-KAD having its engines run up. The proximity of civilianised former RCAF Auster AOP.6 CF-NQC lends substance to the possibility that the series of photographs was taken at Downsview, as the Auster was based there during 1962-70.

One of the two Kenting C-54s undergoes preparation for its next sortie, this view again showing the Sabre cockpit to good advantage. Today falling under the remit of the Canadian Ice Service, the “ice-spotting” task has been made considerably easier with the advent of satellite imagery, but a de Havilland Canada Dash 8 is still used.

CF-KAD [3] CF-KAD comes in to land on the 8,400ft (2,560m) runway at Gander having completed another successful mission. The C-54s were replaced by Lockheed 188 Electras CF-NAY and CF-NAZ, operated by Nordair Ltd of Montreal. The latter aircraft was also fitted with an observation dome similar to the Sabre cockpits fitted to the C-54s.

A member of the DoT’s Meteorological Branch team uses one of the C-54s’ starboard bubble windows to scan the ice fields stretching across the Gulf of St Lawrence during the winter of 1968-69. Kenting Aviation was established in 1947 as an aerial mapping and survey company using retired wartime bombers and transport aircraft specially converted for the role.

Navigator G. Bayliss takes solar observations during one of the long C-54 flights in 1968. Ten years later, sideways-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was fitted to the Electras and a de Havilland Canada Dash 7, enabling a 100km (60-mile) swath either side of the aircraft to be imaged and downloaded instantly via datalink to the icebreaker vessels below.

Decaying Douglases, often to he seen in Africa or South America, are a rarity in Europe. Sadly, given the backlog of restoration work at Alverca, it is difficult to imagine this DC-4 receiving much tender loving care.

Aviation Historian 28 / A.Griffith - Ploughshares into Swords
A comparative illustration of the B-17, B-24, DS-300/DB-4 and DC-4 Bomber/DS-412, emphasising how much larger the latter two would have been than their contemporaries, although their bomb loads were relatively meagre in proportion to their size. Boeing’s B-29 was deemed a better option and first flew in September 1942.

Again based on original documents and drawings, these illustrations of the DC-4 Bomber by the author are speculative, and show the longer nose with glazing for the bombardier and remotely-operated turrets. The latter are likely to have been General Electric Model 33 periscopically-sighted turrets; note on the plan view how the forward top turret was slightly offset from the fuselage centreline.
