  • Designed by Dmitri Grigorovich, the M.5 was the first flying-boat built in large numbers in Russia, more than 300 being produced. The type saw service in the First World War and the Russian Revolution, and this example was captured by Turkish forces in 1916 when it forced-landed near Gorele.

  • After the Second World War a number of Miles Magister trainers were supplied to the Turkish Air Force and about 80 were licence-built by THK during 1944-48. Many survived; the museum has this one on show and another example in store.

    The USA assisted in the modernisation of the Turkish Air Force in the late Forties. Built in 1943, this Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was transferred to Turkey in 1948 and served until 1954.

  • Five Vickers Viscounts were delivered to Turkish carrier THY in 1958. One crashed at Gatwick in 1959 and another at Ankara ten years later. The three survivors were sold to the air force in 1972. One is now on show at the museum, the other two are stored at Ankara.

  • The sole surviving Polish-designed PZL P.24G fighter. Forty P24As were delivered to Turkey, together with parts for a further 20. They were assembled in 1938-39 and examples of the P.24F and -G were produced. About 100 were built in Turkey, powered by Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engines. This P.24G was preserved at the Air Force Training Centre in Ankara before joining the museum in Izmir.

  • American manufacturer Curtiss flew the prototype CW-22 Falcon basic trainer and light-attack aircraft in 1940. Turkey ordered 50 and operated them for a decade. Powered by the 450 h.p. Wright R-975 Whirlwind, the type was popular with pilots.

    This de Havilland Dragon Rapide carries the D.H.86 registration TC-ERK, and inspection of the cockpit and cabin reveals traces of RAF use. The most likely identities are c/n 6687/HG702/TC-HAD or c/n 6688/HG703/TC-PER. Both aircraft were withdrawn from use in 1959.

  • The MKEK Ugur was developed from the Miles Magister, and 60 were delivered to the Turkish Air Force in the mid-Fifties. In the mid-Sixties some were released to flying clubs; the example here was built in 1956 and withdrawn in 1969. The wings on the wall are from THK-designed gliders.
