Colonel C.E. “Bud” Anderson scored a Messerchmitt kill on his first European combat mission as a “Little Friend” escort fighter on one of the first Berlin raids on February 8, 1944. By the end of the war he had accounted for 16 1/4 enemy aircraft, and following post-war test pilot work at Wright-Patterson and Edwards he flew combat with the F-105 in Vietnam.

Lt-Col Bob Goebel briefly flew P-39s in the Panama Canal zone before transferring to the Mediterranean theatre with the 31st FG. He scored 11 1/2 kills in Mustangs: one a Messerschmitt Bf 110, the rest Bf 109s.

Dr Roscoe Brown (right) shot down a Messerschmitt Me 262 while flying with the 100th FS of the 332nd FG. Alex Jefferson (left) was with the 301st. The 332nd FG was the only group never to lose a bomber while on escort duties.
