  • A Macchi-Castoldi MC.72 at an exhibition in Brussels in June 1950. Five MC.72s were built during 1930-31 to participate in the 1931 (and final) Schneider Trophy race. In fact no Italian team took part but on October 23, 1934, Warrant Officer Agello flying an MC.72 set a world speed record for floatplanes of 709-209km/h (440-681 m.p.h.); this record still stands. This MC.72, which had a 2,850/3,000 h.p. Fiat 24-cylinder engine driving contra-rotating propellers, was painted red, had natural copper radiators, and bore the Italian red, white and green rudder markings. It is preserved at the Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare Italians at Vigna di Valle near Rome.
