Регистрационный номер: CX-AYR CX-AYR. wfu at Colonia prior to 2.72. The photo of this a/c shows a completely different colour scheme to the one in our cover photo last time. It was taken at Buenos Aires/Aeroparque 13-7.71 by Alex Reinhard. He comments that there seems to have been several changes in ARCO livery involving the tail and the fuselage markings. We have therefore done a little checking and in Peter Keating's collection found three different shots of CX-AYR.
In the photo the titles are smaller, our reference shot is dated 27.5.71 and AYR has no titles at all.Самолёты на фотографии: Curtiss-Wright C-46 / CW-20 Commando - США - 1940

No.1 shows the CAUSA scheme from a photo dated 6.64 with duplicated regn and the national flag.
No.2 is also dated 6.64, the fuselage cheat-line has been extended and ARCO's bow and arrow symbol replaces the CAUSA motif.
No.3 has an all-red tail with ARCO symbol in a white oval. There is no national flag and the regn is only on the fuselage, in a new position.Самолёты на фотографии: Curtiss-Wright C-46 / CW-20 Commando - США - 1940

The photograph, via A.J.Jackson and Peter Green, shows a very crudely-marked E6. This version has a production engine (post 3-39), undercarriage raked forward, production-style cockpits and tailwheel - but the base of the rudder does not seem quite right and the horizontal tailplane is not as high as on production machines. In the background are camouflaged Tiger Moths - can this help in dating the winter scene?

We have now obtained from BAe via Maurice Marsh this view of an intermediate stage. With a date of 13-10.37, this clearly shows the mid-position tailplane with the coupe top added. In front of the tailplane is a new fairing which is open at the rear. Certainly we can feel more confident that the two lower photos on p.85/84 are of the same aircraft. However, a article in "Popular Flying" of 12.38 said that "For over a year now experimental examples of this machine have been test flown almost daily." and also mentions "an extensive programme of test flights".

"Flight" used the view of E8 on 4.8.38 showing it in a 'clean' paintscheme and which we can only assume was taken earlier that the others. In this view the cowling shape and the presence of the possible attachment points are notable pre-production features.

Регистрационный номер: D-EZIM This time our new problem is to identify the photos below. They reached us from Mike Hooks who was having a look for suitable airfield photos at the time. The three below are only part of a much larger collection featuring an international gathering at Heston. One of the other prints with a nondescript background is labelled 'Lympne 29.8.36' so we could have a mixture of locations. Certainly Flight and Aeroplane recorded an international meet at Lympne at the time, with 36 foreign visitors. So, while you may like to identify these three German visitors, if anyone has details of their itinerary we should be most interested.
The aircraft, whose registration was not visible, was in fact D-EZIM and is identified as a Klemm Kl 32 XIV. Jack recalls that the visit took place at the same time as the 1936 RAF Display at Hendon, so doubtless the Germans, and others, were visiting that event. They also toured other parts of Britain, for example at least four German aircraft can be seen in an aerial view of the opening of the new York airfield in 1936. Lympne was perhaps the most common entry/exit point for non-radio aircraft at the time but we would still welcome more information about the group's itinerary while in the UK.Самолёты на фотографии: Klemm Kl.32 / Kl.36 - Германия - 1932

Регистрационный номер: LV-NLM, CX-AVB CX-AVB. The photo shows this Stinson wearing the illegal marks LV-NLM but with CX registration still applied on top of the wing. It was taken on 12.6.77 at Basavilbaso in Entre Rios province, Argentina by Marcelo Miranda. Also present is Pawnee LV-GRW.

D-ESRY was a Heinkel He 72 B1 Kadett, a type used by Lufthansa training schools before and during the war.
In our notes on D-ESRY on p.86/2 we should have said "Luftwaffe training schools" and not Lufthansa.Самолёты на фотографии: Heinkel He-72 Kadett - Германия - 1933
