With wing slats extended and air brakes open, an A-6E Intruder from VA-34 comes aboard the USS John F Kennedy. The large nose radome covers a Norden AN/APQ-48 all-weather radar system which simultaneously provides a mapping display for detection, identification and acquisition of the target; terrain-avoidance information and aircraft-to-target position for precision bombing.

This illustration of an EA-6A undergoing deck-handling trials prior to delivery to the Marine Corps shows the ECM radomes on each wing and the top of the fin; note also the special equipment pods inboard, the wing fold and the retractable access steps to the cockpit.

An EA-6B Prowler of Navy Squadron VAQ-129, without the sensor pods usually carried beneath wing and fuselage - a fuel tank is visible on the outer wing pylon. The long dorsal spline is a feature of later production EA-6Bs.
