The Nieuport 28C-1 at Rhinebeck, in the markings of the famous “Hat in Ring” squadron of the AEF (the 94th Aero Squadron), is a comparatively recent addition, having taken the place of a restored Nieuport 24 bis in the markings of Charles Nungesser.

Palen’s Spad XIII is a 1918 original and is no longer airworthy, although it was flown for a time after Palen acquired it from the Roosevelt Field Museum. It is painted to represent the aircraft used in 1918 by Capt Eddie Rickenbacker.

The FE 8 at Rhinebeck is an airworthy replica, added only recently to the Palen collection. The Flying Circus is constantly adding new aircraft to its collection as others are retired, sold or “swapped”.

The Avro 504K, a regular flier at Rhinebeck, was built in the UK and appeared in the film “Bells of Hell” before being sold to Palen.

The Fokker D VII used in the Sunday displays at Rhinebeck was originally flown commercially, as a two-seater, by Bert Acosta. It has been restored to fighting configuration and is still powered by its original Mercedes engine.
