  • Another airfield puzzle pic. We will reveal what the last one was next issue - when we recover the original from deepest Gloucestershire and read the back...
That in AM. 1/89 was Wethersfield - with more Horsas. Gliders were distributed around many airfields for storage purposes due to their large numbers.

  • The rather horrifying sight comes from Dick Cronin and is intended to put anybody off engaging in a catapult launch. It looks as though someone glued the floats to the catapult but in fact it is a catapult dummy.
The aircraft is, or was, a Bristol Fighter and it is perched on the catapult of HMS Ark Royal after a test launch on 25 March 1931. It is presumed that the spools failed to release at the end of the run and the abrupt stop did nothing for its state of health.
The catapult-stricken F.2b in AM.1/89. The fuselage bottom longerons have failed during the launch and the lift from the wings has rotated the front part, still attached to the top of the rear part which went on its way underneath it. The impact has applied a down load on to the tail which has then snagged on the catapult and failed to release.

  • The Instant Hurricanes are Audaxes from No.4 SFTS parked around Habbaniya during the attack by Iraqi forces on this airfield in June 1941. There is a Gordon in the background. This is, of course, one of Habbaniya's operational types! A number of Audaxes were struck off charge when 4 SFTS was disbanded soon after the siege and most of these were presumable the dummies produced to fool the enemy into thinking that there was something more potent in the way of fighter defence than a handful of elderly Gladiators.

Jack also provided the two photographs of Audax K3084 which hit a ditch and overturned in, apparently, Egypt, assuming our Egyptian Police uniform recognition holds out. The owner is not evident but the pilot was Flt Lt Grace and the passenger LAC Reed.

Jack also provided the two photographs of Audax K3084 which hit a ditch and overturned in, apparently, Egypt, assuming our Egyptian Police uniform recognition holds out. Because the Audax straddled the ditch, the fin and rudder remain uncrushed as seen in the view of the aircraft being righted. Any ideas as to the unit concerned?
