After experiments with a trailer wing behind a Magister at Farnborough, a plan was devised to fit a similar, but larger wing, to a Beaufighter. This would have a 40-foot span and 20-foot chord and would take into account the experience gained with the Magister's wing.
The RAE noted that its purpose would be for drag tests on laminar flow sections but it was also suggested as a fuel carrier for long-range ferry flights.

In September 1943, a modified nose was fitted to Lancaster ED371/G at Farnborough. This was designed to provide greater visibility and comfort for the bomb aimer.
