  • The XF-14C-2 for the US Navy was another big aircraft that was not needed, the F6F Hellcat doing the job in WW2 and its successor, the F8F Bearcat going the opposite way by aiming for small size.

  • The XP-62 with 2,300 hp Wright R3350-17 was a giant for a single-seater and had a six-blade contraprop to prevent swing on takeoff. Even so the fin had a large fillet to straighten the airflow over the tail. It was cancelled in favour of the P-47G.

  • The XP-60 in its first form was a conversion of the second XP-53 airframe 41-19508 with a laminar-flow wing and a RR Merlin 28 engine. At this stage resemblance to the P-40 is still apparent.

  • The XP-60 seen in flight after modifications which included a larger-fin and rudder. The wing leading edge knuckles of the P-40 undercarriage have disappeared with the inwards-retracting undercarriage of the laminar-flow wing.

  • The new wing and undercarriage are seen on the XP-60D which was modified from the XP-60 by fitting a Merlin 61, later with a four-blade propeller.

  • The XP-60C with P & W R-2800-53 engine and contraprop. The turbo-charger intake is in the bulge under the fuselage. The XP-60C showed up poorly at the April 1943 fighter trials at Patterson Field.

  • YP-60E 43-32763 with the bubble hood which gave it the best pilot's view of all the series. The turbo-supercharger intake is in the chin position at the bottom of the cowling.

This view of the YP-60E shows the chin intake for the turbo-supercharger and the muzzles of the six 0.5 in. machine guns in the wing.

  • The XP-60E with R-2800-10 engine and four-blade propeller. It was produced as a conversion of the airframe of the uncompleted XP-60B and attained a maximum speed of 410 mph at 20,200 ft.

  • The XP-60A combined a new fuselage with the laminar-flow wing and the unavailable Packard Merlin 61 was replaced with an Allison V-1710-75 with 11 ft 8 in diameter Curtiss electric four-blade propeller, but it flew without its turbo-supercharger.

  • XP-60E 42-79425 after its accident, tailwheel still retracted indicating a belly-landing. The Curtiss hollow steel propeller damage indicates the engine stopped and propeller rotated sufficiently by the impact to wreck all four blades.
