These three 101st TFS F-86H pictures, all taken while the aircraft were in transit through Prestwick, illustrate the variety of markings to be found within a single unit during the course of Operation "Stair Step". 53- 1404 wears the 'standard' colour scheme for the unit, the only change being the application of 'U.S. AIR FORCE' in place of the previous 'MASS AIR GUARD' titles.

The ANG inscription on the forward fuselage has been removed but no 'U.S. AIR FORCE' titles have been applied in its place.

Evidence of its immediate past history is apparent beneath the cockpit where the scrubbed title 'N.Y. AIR GUARD' can clearly be seen. Until April 1961 this machine (and 53-1392) had served with the 137th TFS at Westchester County Airport, White Plains, NY. The unit had become an Aeromedical Transport Squadron two months previously and began losing its Sabres in favour of the Fairchild C-119C Flying Boxcar.

An impressive aerial view of the F-84F contingent, taken at Harmon Field in Newfoundland during the deployment phase. In order to conserve fuel prior to the long over-water leg to the Azores, some of the aircraft that made up the first two cells to depart are shown being towed to the end of the runway before engine start.

F-84F 52-6415 of the New Jersey ANG taxies into position on the wet and windswept ramp at Chaumont AB on 3rd November 1961, the first 141st TFS aircraft to reach its temporary home in France. All of the "Stair Step" squadrons applied 'U. S. AIR FORCE' titles to their aircraft in place of the previous ANG lettering, but changes - if any - to other insignia varied considerably from unit to unit. The 141st took the extreme measure of removing all fin markings and replacing them, initially at least, with the TAC badge and yellow lightning flash.
