  • Регистрационный номер: N9479

Fairey IIID Mk.I N9479 flies over Valletta, Malta, in 1929/30. This aircraft was used by the Base Miscellaneous Flight, equivalent to a later station flight, at Hal Far. The identity letter 'M' is carried in a circle on the fin. 207 Fairey IIIDs served with the Fleet Air Arm between 1922 and 1932, being gradually replaced in flights by the Fairey IIIF from 1927 to 1930.

  • Регистрационный номер: XP512

Gnat T.1 XP512 was flying near Valley on 23 June 1967 when tailplane control was lost. The occupants ejected and the aircraft crashed on the beach at Rhoscolyn, one mile south-west of the airfield. It is seen here in October 1967, having been salvaged and taken back to Valley. Given the circumstances of its demise, it is remarkably complete.

  • Регистрационный номер: N181

The Parnall Peto was designed as a submarine-borne reconnaissance aircraft. The Royal Navy had only one submarine with a hangar and catapult, M2, and the Peto had to be folded into the dimensions of this space. N181 first flew on 4 June 1925 and was embarked on M2 until it crashed on landing in Gibraltar harbour on 11 February 1930. A second Peto, N182 was built and also embarked in M2 at intervals. N181 was returned to Britain and was rebuilt as N255. It was aboard M2 when she failed to resurface off Portland Bill on 26 January 1932.

  • The Curtiss Model 18T Wasp was designed as a two-seat fighter powered with a 400 hp Curtiss-Kirkham K-12 engine and two were ordered by the US Navy in March 1918. It had a plywood-covered fuselage and when tested in August 1918, it had a top speed of 163 mph. The US Army ordered two but the war ended before any production was undertaken The Navy 18Ts were mounted on floats for the Pulitzer Trophy Race in 1920. A3325 set a World Altitude Record for seaplanes while as a landplane it reached 34,910 ft. Which aircraft is illustrated is not known.

Boulton Paul Balliol T.2 WG178 served with No.288 Squadron as a target aircraft for training radar operators at No.228 Operational Conversion Unit at Colerne. The squadron was based at Middle Wallop from its reformation on 16 March 1953 until disbanded on 30 September 1957. • Регистрационный номер: K4049

Perhaps the most famous B.9/32 photograph of all, taken as the prototype was pushed across the bridge spanning the River Wey at Brooklands.
The Vickers Crecy was not a euphonious title for a new RAF bomber but it was changed to Wellington at a very early stage. The prototype K4049 is seen here crossing the bridge over the Wey between the factory and the airfield at Brooklands. Apart from the basic layout, it bears little resemblance to the production aircraft. First flight was on 15 July 1936 and while undergoing trials at Martlesham Heath, the elevators broke off and it crashed at Brightwell, Suffolk, on 19 April 1937. Armament was one gun in the nose and one in the tail position but was never fitted.

  • Регистрационный номер: VD364

VD364 was a Bf 109G captured in September 1944. Either some major modifications have been incorporated or someone has painted on the wrong serial number. The photograph shows a Bf 108B Taifun at Cranwell in May 1948 with this serial. It was in camouflage but was later painted overall in blue and flown by Air Commodore Richard Atcherley, the AOC of the Royal Air Force College. No serial was then carried. It still existed until 1950 when it vanished from sight. The RAF had a few Bf 108s during the war when they were given the name 'Aldon'.

  • Регистрационный номер: N1059

N1059 was a F.B.A. Type B powered by a 100 hp Gnome Monosoupape engine. It was an early example of international aircraft construction in that the hulls were built by F.B.A. in France and the remainder by Norman Thompson at Bognor Regis. Other F.B.A.s were built by Gosport Aviation. About 300 F.B.A.s were built in France and saw widespread service at naval air stations. They were used mainly for training but a number were involved in operational tasks from seaplane carriers. A few went to the US Navy when America entered the war in 1917. N1059 spent its time at Calshot.
