Lee Howard has found this photograph of KL978 stuck in an album and has scanned it. This Skymaster was manned by No.232 Squadron and is seen at No.32 Staging Port at Ratmalana, Ceylon, in November 1945. No.232 ran long-range routes out in the Far East and the Skymasters were mainly used on the route to Australia, having the range to reach Perth. It used seven of the ten Skymasters delivered between July 1945 and March 1946 when they were all returned to the US Navy.

John Kendrick has sent in the photograph which is undated and uncredited.
It shows Lancaster I PA386 of No.214 Squadron which was coded QN-Y and the small 'Y' is visible under the nose turret. It was struck off charge on 21 October 1948.
Various aircraft went on show after the war in different locations in London, the Horse Guard's Parade being the usual site. But the background of this photograph reveals that it was taken at the north-east corner of Hyde Park.
Close examination of the crowd shows that they are not looking at the Lancaster but facing the road. Was there some parade in progress with which the presence of the Lancaster was in some way connected?
Getting a Lancaster into this position was not easy. It is unlikely to have flown in! The presence of jacking equipment suggests that some assembly was still in progress - or that they were dismantling it for taking away. In this state, it does not seem likely that it had anything to do with the other activities.
Lancasters were designed to be broken down into sections for road transport but getting it through the streets of London must have been a major undertaking, especially since the city was enclosed in a web of tramcar wires.
Does anyone have a memory of this event? As an ATC cadet, we recall being put on guard duty over a Lancaster in Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh. We don't know how it got there either. We were also placed on a walkway next to the cockpit to answer questions from the public!

An unidentified RAN Sycamore which crashed in February 1955.
In the Winter 2002 issue, we covered the Royal Australian Navy Sycamores. One of them, XA221 was lost while rescuing people from the devastating Maitland floods in New South Wales. This photograph has come to light showing remains in a hangar at Bankstown. Despite appearances, the crew escaped and were picked up downstream from the crash area.
