We have no idea what this is. Or where the photograph was taken. At least the pilot seems to have some protection in the form of a windscreen!
The object in the last issue brought in only one response, from Peter Dance. While cataloguing the negatives of the late Maurice Gates for the photo library, he found a negative that showed a larger area. In it was Meteor EE476 and the two props visible in the photo belonged to Blackburn YA-8s WB781 and WB788.
This appears to place the photo as September 1953. The most likely purpose of the rig was to test arresting systems in the form of crash barriers, etc.
