Всего два года понадобилось инженеру по эксплуатации компании "North American Aviation" Джеймсу Р. Беде, чтобы в 1960 году вместе с отцом Джеймсом А. Модификации BD-5 Micro

   BD-5 Micro: одноместный легкий самолет с превосходными летными данными, на его чертежи и наборы для сборки было сделано более 5000 заказов, но затраты на создание и продвижение этого самолета и различные проблемы привели "Bede" к финансовому краху
   BD-5A: прототип моноплана с низко расположенным крылом. V-образным хвостовым оперением и двигателем мощностью 40 л.с. Первый полет состоялся 12сентября 1971 года
   BD-5B: изначально предназначался для замены модификации BD-5A с крылом большего размаха, но с 1974 года V-образное хвостовое оперение было заменено обычным, мощность двигателя составляла 70 л. с.
   BD-5C: улучшенный BD-5B с уменьшенным размахом крыла для демонстрации высшего пилотажа
   BD-5D: серийная модификация BD-5C заводской сборки
   BD-5S: прототип планера с увеличенным размахом крыла, поднялся в воздух в 1975 году
   BD-5J: поршневой двигатель был заменен небольшим турбореактивным
   BD-5JP: модификация BD-5J заводской сборки, не дошедшая до серийного выпуска

The Aerial Productions International SMART-1 (Small Manned Aerial Radar Target, Model 1), derived from the BD-5J, is a small, lightweight single-engine jet. During WTI the type simulates enemy threats, such as cruise missiles, to present a realistic threat to air and ground forces in training.

Ames Industrial, UK agent for Microturbo of Toulouse, presented the Bede BD-5J belonging to Air Jet International. Powered by a Microturbo TRS-18 turbojet giving 200 lb thrust, it qualifies as the world’s smallest jet aircraft, with a span of 17ft and a length of 12.4ft. Its landing and take-off runs were impressively long for such a mite.
