Junkers Ju 52/3m N52JU is almost certainly the only airworthy German-built aircraft left, apart from the Swiss A.F. trio. It started life with the Luftwaffe and went to DNL post-war to operate on floats as LN-KAF. Later it went to Ecuador as HC-ABS, but was abandoned and overgrown by the jungle until rescued by author Martin Caidin. It then became N130LW but has since become N52JU and has acquired many extras, including four wing guns and a dorsal gun. To dissuade "pursuers" further, smoke generators are attached to the wing engines and to blind them, strobe lights flash out from wing and tail.

Mace Scorchy N5588N makes use of many parts from a Bede BD-5 but has a tractor engine and tail-dragging undercarriage. Another BD-5 mod. is the Option Acapella with twin-booms, which also came to Oshkosh.

Grumman TBM-3E N86280, one of three Avengers at the show, is painted in the light/dark-grey scheme used during the earlier stages of the war, when the red bar had not yet been adopted in the U.S. marking.

One of the stars of the show was Hamilton Glassair N88TH, a side-by-side two-seater made by Stoddard Hamilton Aircraft Inc. Already in production in kit form, its 115-h.p. Lycoming O-235 gives a cruising speed of 200 m.p.h.

Mudry CAP-21 F-WZCH is a brand-new aerobatic aircraft which was to be used by Eric Muller and Louis Pena at the World Aerobatic Championships due to follow the EAA Convention. It appears to differ considerably from the earlier CAP-20, with a new fuselage, wing and undercarriage.

Following the deluge came the flood and Canadian-built Rutan VariEze C-GHYP was one of many to find its feet wet in the morning. A U.S.-built model, N37840, won the Grand Champion award after flying all the way from Alaska.

The Weedhopper Gipsy shows the trend in ultra-lights. Designed by John Chotia, it has a 25-h.p. Chotia 460 and an empty weight of 165 lb. It is similar in layout to the 1924 Dormoy Bathtub, a replica of which flew in.

Zenair this year have produced their CH-150 Akro-Zenith for aerobatic training. C-GCGW proved to be very agile, is stressed to ±12g and has a 115-h.p. Lycoming O-200. A.u.w. is 1,150 lb., top speed 170 m.p.h. and range 650 miles.

Beautiful EAA-built replica of the Laird Super Solution, NR12048. Matty Laird designed the original Solution to beat the Travelair Mystery Ship in races. The Super Solution was flown by Jimmy Doolittle to win the 1931 Bendix Trophy. Both Laird and Doolittle were at Oshkosh this year, and Laird has assisted in advising on the construction of the Super Solution

Winner of the Grand Champion Antique award for 1980 was Buhl LA-1 Bullpup NC348Y. Owned by Dan F. Neuman of Minneapolis, it is powered by a three-cylinder Szekely radial.

Viking Dragonfly N5WN. The Quickie designed by Burt Rutan is a single-seater, but N5WN is a two-seater powered by a 1,600-c.c. Volkswagen and cruises at about 145 m.p.h. It is one of the first home-builts to use carbon-fibre in its construction and won the Outstanding New Design award.

New Standard D-31. This is a unique biplane built just before Pearl Harbor, in 1941. N29090, c/n. 100, is owned by P. L. Direnzc and is the last in a long line of biplanes such as the D-25 built for crop-dusting.
