"Convair" использовала на YB-60 не только двигатели J57, установленные на XB-52, но также и мотогондолы, поставленные компанией "Boeing". Кабина и фюзеляж YB-60 практически идентичны самолету B-36.

An unsuccessful attempt was made by Convair to compete with the B-52 by producing an all-jet derivative of the B-36. As the YB-60, only this single prototype was flown.

CONVAIR YB-60. The Consolidated-Vultee YB-60 was built four years ago to meet the same overall specification as the Boeing B-52A Stratofortress. The latter faced a considerable challenge because the Convair YB-60 had the initial advantage of being a direct development of the B-36, a standard production inter-continental heavy bomber. The Fort Worth, Texas, engineers retained as much of the production B-36 as possible so as to permit a rapid tooling change-over to the YB-60 had the design secured the contract. The greater part of the fuselage was retained and built on to the new swept wings and tail assembly. Two YB-60 prototypes were built, the first taking the air on 18th April, 1952. Like the YB-52, the YB-60 mounted eight 8,800-lb.s.t. Pratt & Whitney J57-P-3 turbojets in four twin pods, but being bulkier and heavier than the YB-52, the maximum speed was 30 m.p.h. slower, 620 m.p.h. Loaded weight, 360,000 lb. Service ceiling, over 50,000 ft. Span, 206 ft. ; length , 171 ft.

Дополнительная опора шасси самолета на данной фотографии по требованию цензуры была заретуширована, причиной чего, вероятно, послужили цензурные запреты на изображения шасси самолета XB-52.

Конкурент B-52 - реактивный Конвер YB-60 должен был быть дешевой модификацией поршневого B-36 (на заднем плане), но сохранил лишь 28% общих с ним узлов и вырос в цене «до небес»
