R.Burgess - Viking Sunset /Military/
Two S-3B Viking aircraft assigned to Sea Control Squadron Two One (VS-21) ‘Red Tails’ near the island of Okinawa during a training exercise flown from the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) in August 2004. The Viking's large fin lent itself to splendid squadron markings. The Republic of Korea is interested in procuring former US Navy aircraft as a mid-size MPA.
An S-3A of VS-38 receives fuel through its retractable probe. Note that this Viking is itself equipped with a buddy pod (on the port underwing pylon, outboard of the engine) for in-flight refuelling.
A VS-32 S-3B drops a 2,000lb mine on a range during an exercise. Mining was a secondary mission of the Viking but never required in an actual operation during the aircraft’s service life.
A VS-32 S-3B taxis toward a waist catapult as another Mauler Viking prepares to launch. The Viking had excellent handling characteristics on a carrier deck.
City of Oakland, a US-3A carrier on-board delivery version of the Viking, is seen parked on the apron of NAS Alameda, California. The US-3A could carry the heavy loads of the Grumman C-2A Greyhound, but its longer range made it vital to support of carriers deployed to the Indian Ocean
A VS-22 S-3B refuels an F/A-18C assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 105 Gunslingers in April 2003 over the Mediterranean during a mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
With its tailhook lowered an ES-3A Shadow assigned to VQ-6 prepares to land on board a carrier. Though its career was short, the Shadow was highly effective signals intelligence gathering aircraft and it rendered excellent service over Bosnia and Iraq.
