  • Hawker Furies of 43 Sqn up from RAF Tangmere in October 1938. The aircraft were camouflaged, with the white and yellow roundel circles omitted, for the duration of the Munich crisis. When war was declared in September 1939 around 50 Fury IIs were still in service.
    Camouflaged 43 Sqn Furies up from RAF Tangmere in October 1938. From September 1938 all the squadron's Furies were painted thus, with squadron markings deleted for the duration of the Munich Crisis.

  • The cruiser HMS Suffolk had eight 8in guns and could carry up to three Walrus amphibians, launched by catapult. In April 1940 the author’s squadron spotted for Suffolk’s gunfire on Stavanger aerodrome. The cruiser was severely damaged by dive bombers on her way home.

    10 FTS Anson I N9689 takes off over the top of another 10 FTS, machine, K8727. Following its transfer to 9 FTS, the former aircraft was lost at sea on March 23, 1941 aboard the SS Beaverbrae, bound for the Royal Canadian Air Force. K8727 was delivered to the RCAF in June the same year.

    Avro Anson I K6301 was visiting Brough in January 1938 from RAF Leconfield and overshot. It was part of the second batch of RAF production aircraft.
    Anson I K6301 served with Nos 215 and 75 Sqns before joining the Ferry Flight at RAF Cardington. It is pictured here shortly after it crashed on the approach to Brough on January 1, 1938. Many Ansons were inadvertently landed wheels-up.
