First flown in December 1953, the Firefly U.8 was a modified version of the A.S.7/T.7. It was used as a pilotless target-drone and piloted observer aircraft for guided-missile development. The wingtip pods carried cameras.

Production Firefly Is in the MB serial range awaiting delivery in late 1944. The type first entered service with 1770 Sqn FAA and was put into operation for the first time in July 1944.
