Built as a Wellington Mk X, NC928 was later converted to a Mk 18. The Hercules-powered radar/navigation trainer is seen here in November 1944. Similar to the Mk XIII but fitted with a Mosquito nose and scanner, the Mk 18 was modified internally to accommodate four pupils, instructor and radar equipment.

Wellington T.18 RP429, with the obvious “doggy nose” for the AI Mk 10 radar scanner. In 1951 the author learned his trade on this aircraft, amongst others, at 228 OCU.

Bristol Buckmaster RP201. This was a real heavy tank of an aircraft to fly. It was also difficult to enter; kick-in steps led up the port side of the fuselage, aft of the wing, and from there one carefully walked to the cockpit and dropped in via a top hatch - quite a challenge on a wet and windy day!

Designed from the outset as a wartime target-tug, the Miles Martinet was based on the Master trainer. After the war the Martinet served with air gunnery schools and operational training units in addition to Anti-Aircraft Co-operation squadrons. The all-wooden aircraft was powered by an 870 h.p. Bristol Mercury radial engine.

A fine photograph of a late-production Mosquito NF.30 of 500 Sqn which, externally at least, was identical to the NF.36, a variant used in large numbers for training night-fighter crews at 228 OCU at RAF Leeming in 1951.
