The cockpit of a Merlin-engined Halifax photographed in April 1942. A locking device is fitted to the “spectacles" of the control column. The wheel brakes were operated with the smaller spectacles within the spectacle-type control wheel. The second pilot sat on the starboard side and supervised the instruments mounted on his side of the panel. The top set of levers on the quadrant are the throttles, and those immediately below are the controls for the de Havilland propellers.
