A late survivor of the biplane era was Hart K5861, seen here flying from Boscombe Down in 1941. It was finally struck off charge on January 24, 1944.

Sgts Parkinson, the author, Newton, Arber and Pidd in December 1939. Parkinson and Pidd were killed during the early part of the Battle of Britain; Newton was shot down and injured, and Arber was killed post-war.

No 2 Sqn’s B.E.2s out in force at Montrose in 1913. The hangars survive to this day, and are now listed buildings. The chimney belongs to the local brewery, which is still operating.
