With the Suez crisis HMS Eagle increased its complement of Sea Venom FAW.21s to nine, by absorbing 890 Sqn. Here an 893 Sqn Sea Venom makes a wheels-up arrival on Eagle in November 1956.

This photograph was taken at RAF Upwood, Huntingdonshire, on July 24, 1956, when 61 Sqn took part in the AOC's parade and inspection. The squadron’s Canberra B.2s flew out to Nicosia on October 22-23 as part of Operation Musketeer.

In addition to the Valiants at Luqa, Malta, four squadrons of Canberra B.2s and B.6s, comprising 29 aircraft, arrived at Hal Far from England. They joined in high-level attacks against Egyptian airfields which began in the afternoon of October 31, 1956. Here, armourers bomb-up Canberra B.2 WH951 with 1,000lb medium-capacity bombs. This aircraft was destroyed in March 1957 at Luqa when its brakes failed.

Troops and Whirlwind helicopters stand by aboard the carrier HMS Theseus as the smoke of distant fires streams over Port Said. For the first time in British military history, carrier-borne helicopters were used in operational landings and, together with RAF and Army helicopters, put ashore some 500 men of the Royal Marine Commandos on November 5, 1956.
