Brown study of Bristol 175 Britannia 101 prototype G-ALBO making a flypast at the 1956 SBAC Show at Farnborough on the power of the Bristol Orion in its starboard outer nacelle and the Proteus 755 in its port outer nacelle, with the propellers of its two inboard Proteus 705s feathered.

Lincoln B.I RA643 was taken from RAF service in 1947 to be adapted by Napier at Luton to take a Phoebus in a bomb-bay installation. After only 23 1/2 hr test flying the engine project was discontinued and the bomber returned to the RAF.

Test flying of the Theseus propeller turbine began in Lincoln B.2 RA716/G, the installation having been made by Bristol Engines at Patchway. Later, two additional Lincolns were similarly modified, and RA716/G went to Martlesham Heath in 1955 for Rolls-Royce Avon test flying.

Avro Lincoln SX972 flies on the power of the two 3,200 e.s.h.p. Bristol Proteus turboprops in its outer nacelles. It first flew in this form on December 12, 1950.

In 1947 D.Napier and Son Ltd at Luton equipped Lincoln RA643 with a Bristol Phoebus turbojet in its bomb bay.
The Phoebus Lincoln conversion was undertaken by Napier’s Flight Development section. Bristol deputy chief test pilot “Wally” Gibb was the chosen pilot.

Before it was brought into the Proteus test programme, Airspeed Ambassador G-AKRD had been used for Centaurus development. It was used for Proteus de-icing trials, with a water spray grid fitted on the port side as shown.

The second prototype Airspeed Ambassador, G-AKRD, as a testbed for the Proteus 705 intended for the Britannia 100. First flown thus powered on December 22,1953, it appeared in the following year’s SBAC Display.
