The first stage in the major re-equipment programme on which the Luftwaffe is now engaged was the order for 88 McDonnell RF-4E Phantom II tactical reconnaissance aircraft. Deliveries began in January 1971 and the RF-4Es are flown eventually by Aufkl.G 51 and 52.
