D.Murray Peden - Salute to the Stirling (1)
The prototype Stirling, L7600, first flew on May 14, 1939, but was totally wrecked on landing. The second prototype, L7605, did not fly until seven months later, on December 3, 1939.
An unidentified Stirling 1.
This war-weary Stirling Mk I, W7447, served with No 1651 Conversion Unit in 1942, which probably accounts for its battered appearance.
Stirling Mk I W7459 was built by Austin Motors at Longbridge, who shared production of the type with the Short factories at Belfast and Rochester.
Short Stirling Mk 1 MG-M, W7442, seen at Oakington in late 1941. No 7 Squadron Stirlings made their first attack on the night of February 10/11th, the target being oil storage tanks at Rotterdam.
Stirling Mk 1 N3641, MG-D, took part in No 7 Squadron’s first operational mission.
