    Estonian Air Tu-134A-3 ES-AAF on approach to Moscow/Sheremetyevo. Operating from bases at Tallinn/Ylemiste and Tartu/Yienurme, Tu-134s are the mainstay of the Estonian fleet, although the recent delivery of two Boeing 737-500s probably signifies the beginning of the end for the type with the Estonian flag-carrier.

    ‘Agricultural’ Tu-134SKh SSSR-65917 is one of 12 produced to fulfil a Ministry of Agriculture requirement to survey crops - hence the large ear of wheat behind the Aeroflot titles. The removable underwing pods contain surveillance radar to measure condition, temperature, humidity and the fertilisation needs of crops surveyed.

    Tu-134As RA-65958 (foreground) and RA-65612 at Syktyvkar in June 1994 emphasise the difference between the early glazed nose and the later solid nose housing the Grozna radar. Although the solid nose was not introduced until the Tu-134B came along, several Tu-134As were later converted, including those of Interflug, of which -65612 was one, before being returned to Aeroflot.

  • Russian Air Force Tu-134UB-L (Uchebno-Boevoi dla Lotchikov or trainer for pilots) Red 17 shows off its distinctive nose profile. Used to train Tu-160 pilots, it contains Blackjack radar in the nose cone and first entered service in early 1991 with the 184th Regiment at Priluki Air Base. The similar Tu-134BSh (Bombardirovochno-Shturmanskiy or bomber navigational) has Tu-22M radar in the nose for student navigator training at the Tambov military school.
