    Sioux AH.1 XT131/‘B’ was one of 50 built for the Army Air Corps by Agusta before Westland took-over licence production of the remaining 250 examples for the AAC and RAF. This example continues to fly today with the AAC Historic Flight at Middle Wallop, having previously served with the Advanced Rotary Wing Flight there for pilot training.

    The open cockpit Bell 47B-3, depicted here by demonstrator NC142B, was a crop-spraying variant available from 1948 and fitted with two hoppers of a total capacity of 400Ib (180kg) fitted either side of the fuselage. The type has seen extensive use in this role, for which later models are still in use today.

    The first Bell 47B, NX41967, is seen about to land at Midtown Skyport, just off the East River in Manhattan, while being flown by Bell Aircraft test pilot Harry Mitchell during an early demonstration flight around 1947. The Model 47B was the first commercial production variant with a total of 78 built, including the agricultural 47B-3 variant which retained the open cockpit.

    Early model Bell 47B-3 G-AKFA/Sir Balin was registered on September 11, 1947 and was one of two operated by British European Airways Experimental Helicopter Unit at Yeovil until being damaged beyond repair in an accident at Gatwick on January 4, 1955.

    The Bell 47 as most people know it today is exemplified here by the Model 47G-3 which first flew on July 2, 1959. The Model 47G became the standard production model and was also produced in large numbers for many military customers, including the UK Army Air Corps.

  • Three early flexible nylon float-equipped Bell 47Ds, the first variant with the now familiar bubble canopy, pose for the manufacturer’s photographer prior to delivery to the City of New York Police Department which used the type for many years, including later Model 47Js during the 1960s.
