This photo is completely blank on the reverse but possibly readers can identify the aircraft illustrated. It appears to be a French Douglas DB-7 with number 91 under the wing. Since only about 70 DB-7s reached France, it might be '16' upside down!

A Bleriot-Spad 51-2 (61-2 ???) of the Polish Air Force in an unfortunate but sadly typical position. First flown in June 1924, the Spad 51 was not adopted by the French services but fifty were sold to Poland, where they had a miserable reputation with accusations of corrupt buying practices being flung around.

The Mediterranean is not always calm and sunny as this photo of a Meridionali Ro 43 on its catapult. This one appears to be on the forecastle of either Andrea Doria or Caio Duilio, both battleships. Although catapults were also fitted amidships and astern, a number of Italian battleships and cruisers had them in the bows, not a particularly sheltered spot in heavy seas.

Siemens-Schuckert designed several fighters during World War One but these were not the most successful. In the background is the E-I, of which about twenty were built, with its prominent synchronised machine gun. Using the same basic fuselage, the biplane is the DD-V of which only the prototype was built.

Taxying out in the Northern Adriatic is a Macchi M.5 single-seat fighter flying boat. With a maximum speed of 127 mph, it often out-performed the opposing Austro-Hungarian fighters, even land-based ones. 344 were built and were succeeded by the M.7 in 1924. Fighter flying boats continued in service in Italy until 1938.
